Every great sailor has a starting point. For 14-year-old Collin Curry, that starting line was the calm waters of the Shark River in Belmar, New Jersey. As a young camper at the Friends of Belmar Harbor (FOBH) Summer Sailing Program, Collin’s passion for sailing was first sparked — and it’s a passion that continues to propel him to new heights.
Earlier this year, that journey reached a remarkable milestone: Collin represented Team USA at the 35th International Vila de Palamós Optimist Trophy in Spain this past February. Competing against some of the top young sailors from around the world, Collin showcased not only his skill and determination, but also the roots of a journey that began right here in our community.
Collin, a Manasquan native and 8th grader at Wall Intermediate School, began sailing at age 11 after attending FOBH’s summer sailing camp. Inspired by his experience on the Shark River, he went on to join the junior program at Metedeconk River Yacht Club. Over the last two years, he has trained intensively with CERT (Coastal Elite Racing Team), traveling across the country to compete at local, regional, and national regattas.
Outside of sailing, Collin leads a busy and balanced life. He runs cross country, plays flag football, and performs viola in multiple orchestras — proving that excellence isn’t just found on the water.
As proud as he is to represent Metedeconk River Yacht Club, CERT, and Team USA, Collin hasn’t forgotten where it all began. Friends of Belmar Harbor is honored to have played a role in introducing him to the sport and helping ignite a lifelong love for sailing.
His story is a powerful reminder of what access and opportunity can unlock for young people — and why FOBH remains committed to making sailing available to all.
Congratulations, Collin! We can’t wait to see where the wind takes you next. ⛵🇺🇸
