The Optimist (or Opti) is the biggest dinghy class in the world with over 150,000 kids sailing in over 100 countries. It is a stable, forgiving platform designed for kids to learn how to sail and enjoy time on the water, learn to race, and even compete at local regional, national, and international regattas. It is truly a stepping stone to wherever your sailor may want to head in the sport of sailing.

We offer week-long programs throughout the summer for 8 to 16 year‐olds.  Join us for one week or the whole summer long.  Students can learn to sail or build on their past knowledge.  We have programs at all levels, from beginning sailing through advanced racing.  Classes are from 9am -3pm on weekdays starting July 1, and running through August 30.

Not yet ready to sail?  How about splashing around and getting to know our inlet through the Discovery Program (ages 7-11) where students start in human-powered watercraft and learn a bit about the body of water we live near.  Often they are passengers on the larger sailboats -- which is a great way to whet the appetite for future sail programs.

Regardless of age, we have introductory and advanced courses that will match students to other students that are close in age and in a boat that is appropriate to them in terms of physical size, strength, and ability. FOBH follows US Sailing teaching methods. This curriculum focused on safety, fun and learning, and adheres to US Sailing’s standards. The various instructional programs available at FOBH are described:
