Brian Hull returns as the Executive Director at the Friends of Belmar Harbor to lead the 25-year-old sailing school based on the Shark River. Brian’s years of experience began in his youth on Barnegat Bay. Over the past 20 years he has served as the head coach of the Donovan Catholic Sailing team in Toms River. He has led the team to local, regional, and national championships.
Brian’s skills at developing a passion in his students for a lifetime of sailing will enhance the effectiveness of the summer classes on the Shark River.
Sailing teaches life skills through self-discovery. This is a very effective and interesting way to learn. There is simply nothing like being able to pilot your own craft at any age. Sailing creates a sense of adventure which combines curiosity and boldness and becoming comfortable to face new challenges. It does so while being fun creating the desire to enjoy new challenges.
The Friends offer week-long sailing camps that run throughout the summer for 8- to 16-year‐olds. Students can learn to sail or build on their past knowledge. There are programs at all levels, from beginning sailing through advanced racing. Classes are from 9am -3pm on weekdays starting in July and run through August each year.
For children not ready to sail yet, the Friends offer the Discovery Camp for ages 7-11 where children can start in human powered watercraft and learn about the body of water that we live by.
The FOBH was founded in 1999. Past President Mr. Roy Childers headed the FOBH during its period of growth. As an experienced sailor he enjoyed seeing children discover the joy of sailing as he had as a youth.
The Friends of the Belmar Harbor is a volunteer-driven nonprofit educational organization which promotes the health and vitality of the Shark River Bay and those who live, work and play on, in and around it, by providing to all but - especially to youth and families of limited means, abilities or opportunities — adventures in competitive and recreational sailing, kayaking, ecosystem tours, shoreline cleanups and related activities that are accessible, affordable and fun.
