Katherine K Walsifer

Katherine Walsifer has spent her life sailing and learning about the marine environment of the Jersey Shore.

​

Like many of the world’s finest sailors, she began her sailing on the Barnegat bay. She is a graduate of the Bay Head Yacht Club sailing program mastering sailing Opti’s, 420s, and Bytes. On the weekends, Katie sails with her family on E-scows and A Cats in the BBYRA series. She is an accomplished competitive sailor traveling to many large regattas throughout the East Coast including competing in the E-Scow national championships.

Katherine has a large coaching and educating background. She was one of the very first coaches in the FOBH program.  After FOBH, Katherine continued as a sailing instructor and coach at the Monmouth Boat Club, and at the Shrewsbury Sailing Yacht Club.  She ran the SSYC Sailing program for 6 years. Katie has also been the coach for the Point Beach High school sailing team and The Red Bank Catholic High School Sailing team.

Katherine’s love for teaching children does not end with sailing. Katie is a Special Education teacher in the Long Branch School District; she is currently teaching 3rd grade. She has worked in Long Branch for 10 years.  A graduate of Georgian Court University, Katherine earned her Bachelor’s degree in Psychology and Education with certifications in K-5 teaching and Teacher of the Handicap.

This year, Katherine is coming back to our organization to run the science part of FOBH’s Shark River Sailing and Science Academy.  Her primary focus will be to ensure that the Discovery Camp is educational and filled with fun activities.  Katie may also be helping our advance sailors with their competitive sailing skills. Katie will fulfill the role as the Marine Science Head Instructor in charge of overseeing the education programs and staff running our Discovery Camp and the Marine Environment Science Program.  She is very much looking forward to a great summer and being a part of the Shark River team.
